What is The Ballerina Supremacy?
Inspired by the original "Ballerina Project", The Ballerina Supremacy is my own portfolio of extra-ordinary ballet dancers photography, off-stage (here mostly in the city of Munich, Germany) and up close.
Why this project?
I am very lucky to have been introduced to the beautiful world of professional ballet about a year ago. As a photographer, it was of course for me a unique opportunity to take pictures of wonderful and talented dancers, but also to get to know some incredible people. This made me realize that behind the classical discipline, the pointe shoes and the tutus, there is a whole world out there that is quite unknown (and mostly misunderstood) by the audience.
So I thought: "What if I could show people what I know and go beyond what they usually see?" The aim of this project is to take the dancers off their usual environment and put them in a modern urban or natural setting, to get them closer to the viewers (in every sense of the term). As this project evolves, the scope will also evolve with it. But basically, the idea is to "humanize" ballet dancers and create some visually appealing pictures with it.
Who is behind the project?
The Photographer: Day Kol (me) is an international portrait and wedding photographer who discovered a passion for ballet. You can check out some of my work here: www.daykolphotography.com
The Ballerinas: Dancers from the Munich Bayerisches Staatsballet (Munich Bavarian State Ballet Company). A BIG THANK you here to all of them for their time and involvement in this project!
