Katherina Markowskaja

The story behind this picture: a few days before the beginning of the season I got a message from Katherina. She finally had some time to do a shooting with me. Katherina was principal dancer at the Dresden Semper Oper and is now a “freelance” ballerina based out of Munich (and thus dancing a lot for the Bayerisches Staatsballet). I think that we started talking about working together almost a year ago but her very busy schedule never allowed it. So when I had the opportunity to work with such a talented and experienced dancer, I had to drop everything I was doing and packed my camera. We agreed to do a last minute sunrise shooting. Weather forecast was for a nice Sunday early morning with temperatures up to 20°C at 7am…Lesson learned: don’t trust the weather forecast! When we arrived at the location I had picked, it was barely 15°C, windy and the sky didn’t really look reassuring (it rained all day a bit later). But I didn’t want to miss that opportunity so we did what we could and used the elements as they were given to us.

That’s how we ended up with this epic background :)

Thank you Katherina for braving the cold wind and early morning wake up call!

Mia Cooper – Regatta Park

Wow, it’s been over a month since my last post! I’m going to cut the usual “I’m sorry, I have been busy” and simply  post a new picture ;)

Martina Balabanova – Panzerwiese

I am really happy that spring is around! Those day of snow and -15°C are over. But they did offer some beautiful backgrounds and light, didn’t they?

Giuliana Bottino & Nikita Korotkov – Starnberg

After our first introductory session (which was not ideal to say the least: in winter, at night on a rooftop…) we agreed to wait a bit for some better weather conditions. It also gave us some time to reset and think more about what we were doing. As the first day of springs started, I suggested as a contrast to the city skyline that we go out to one of the lakes that surrounds Munich. I had this one location in mind with a waterfall for a while and I was just waiting for a dancer/s not afraid to get their feet wet (which Giuli did on many occasions during this trip…) and up for a little hike through the woods.

Giuliana and Nikita really wanted to make it happen so they were perfect for the place. The path to the waterfall itself made for an incredible setting and we had to stop several times to shoot pictures along the way (more to come…). The road was tricky, slippery and wild but who said ballerinas are made of sugar??

Anyways, this is another example of going the extra mile for the perfect shot. And I think our efforts were rewarded with this amazing background and a beautiful location.

Thank you Giuli and Nikita for being such a good sport! Sorry about your pointe shoes Giuli ;)

Mia Cooper – Neuhausen

Welcome Mia Cooper to the Project! We have now 2 Mia but they couldn’t be more different from one another! Mia Rudic from Serbia has long dark hair, dark skin whereas Mia Cooper here from Australia has long blond hair and fair white skin with freckles.

From the Bayerisches Staatsballet official page: Mia Cooper was born in Queensland / Australia, where she started dancing at the local Ballet School. Then she was trained at the Heinz-Bosl-Stiftung in Munich, where she received her diploma in 2008. She joined the Bavarian State Ballet as a trainee in the season 2008/2009 and joined the Corps de ballet one year later.

Fun fact was that Mia, unlike many other ballerinas, didn’t start dancing at a very young age. She grew up in Australia swimming and playing tennis before she discovered ballet at a much later age. She the moved to Europe to perfect her education as a dancer and pursue a career as a professional ballerina.

Maria Sascha Khan – National Theater

Welcome Maria Sascha to the project! The first American dancer joining us. Also a member of the Bayerisches Staatsballet since season 2010/2011, Maria Sascha is from Montana, USA. She started her training in the Dance-Academy Princesse Grace in Monaco, followed by an engagement at the State Ballet Berlin before joining the company in Munich.

One thing that sets Maria Sascha bit apart is that she has a very talented family! Her sister is also a ballet dancer in Munich and her 2 brothers are both training at the prestigious Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow, Russia. On top of that, she is a mentor for the Youth Arts in Action program.

“The mission of Youth Arts in Action is to inspire, educate and sponsor outstanding young artists who have demonstrated an ability to pursue a professional career in the arts. We focus on classical dance and the arts that support it, such as fine arts and music.” (from the YAA official website)

So in my way, this is my contribution to supporting young artists and raising awareness for ballet, via this project.

Wlademir Faccioni – Ammersee

Ahhh…Bavaria…Remember my first picture of Wlademir? (here) It was snowing and -5°C…Well, the good thing about the weather in Munich is that it is quite unpredictable. A couple of weeks later we shot this image at the lake. It was a beautiful day and almost +15°C!

A good reason to jump for joy!

Giuliana Bottino & Nikita Korotkov – Harras

As I mentioned in my post about Wlademir Faccioni, to me, the natural evolution of this project was to involve male dancers. The next step from there was easy: couples! So  it just happened to be that Giuliana and Nikita are a real couple in life too. Both professional dancers at the Bayerisches Staatsballet.

Working with male dancer was a bit different than working with female dancers, but working with a couple is a whole new story! Not only do I have to try and keep an eye on both “models” as individuals but I also have to make sure that they work as life partners in front of the camera and not only as dance partners. That they keep that connection that creates a special bond between them when they are not on stage.

A few days before this shooting I had the opportunity to watch Giuliana and Nikita on stage in “Daphnis & Chloé” (they both had the leading roles) and I could witness their capacity to work in front of an audience as a dance partners. But in front of the camera as “life partners who also happen to be dancers” was a much greater challenge! I learnt a lot from this session and I hope that I will be able to apply this knowledge now to my future couples and next shootings.

Martina Balabanova – Hartelholz

To continue my winter serie: -11°C (14°F) on a beautiful winter day. You have to be either crazy or very dedicated to the project to put on your pointe shoes and look graceful and effortless outside. Martina is a bit of both. Thankfully :) The result is as you can see worth the efforts.

We will not let frozen temperatures and a bit of fluffy snow stop us!
